Hallux valgus
Hallux valgus, more commonly known as a bunion, is a progressive foot condition where the big toe begins to lean toward the second toe, creating a prominent bony bump on the side of the foot. This change in alignment can place extra pressure on the joint, leading to pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty wearing certain shoes. Over time, hallux valgus may also affect the way you walk, reduce comfort during daily activities, and contribute to other foot problems such as corns, calluses, or overlapping toes.
The condition can develop for a number of reasons, including inherited foot structure, poor biomechanics, arthritis, or long-term pressure from unsuitable footwear. Early assessment and treatment can help manage symptoms and slow progression. Depending on the severity, treatment may include footwear advice, custom orthotics, padding, strengthening exercises, and strategies to reduce joint stress and inflammation. A podiatrist can assess the underlying cause of your hallux valgus and recommend a personalised treatment plan to improve comfort, support foot function, and help you stay active.
